Music, art, nature, the fundamental principles of life, the universe and everything, right down to the most random, mercurial act – even the trajectory of a cigarette butt flicked artfully from the gnarled fingertips of Keith Richards as he reaches to play a new riff in a flash moment of inspiration; even the movement of Bobby George’s mullet as he leans forward to throw for double top; even the progression of events in a dream dreamt by Boris Johnson after he’s eaten too much cheese (ok, maybe not that) – is founded on maths.

Doesn’t make it any more interesting though, does it? Didn’t stop us getting chucked out of maths class for trying to stamp ink symbols on our friend’s head using an eraser marked with fresh ink, while the teacher tried yet again to teach us about Algeria or something. If only our friend hadn’t dodged out of the way and smashed his head on the classroom window, forcing the teacher to conclude, using that mathematically superior mind of his, that we’d punched our friend in the head.

Oh well, perhaps we’d have ended up learning how to do Algeria, or learnt that way of working out how long the sides of a Bermuda Triangle are, or been able to work out how to do long decisions; or perhaps not.

Actually, some of us here did learn maths, and are dashed clever, which is why we were able to practically invent the new computer programme needed to make this video for Foals.

It’s a video of great firsts, the best of which being this - it is officially the first time in history that maths has ever been cool. Nice one Foals! We got your number too!
